Saturday, October 17, 2026 — Latest, as of 9:45 AM PT
The Norte Fire started about 11:30 a.m. Friday near Portico Del Norte in San Clemente and crossed into San Juan Capistrano. In a Saturday morning update (7:53 AM), OCFA Public Information Officer Greg Barta said the fire is 570 acres and 5% contained, crews worked overnight, six homes were damaged or destroyed, two firefighters were injured, and the cause is under investigation; today’s focus is to keep attacking the fire and get residents home as soon as it is safe (OCFA video). CAL FIRE’s page, last updated 8:08 AM, agrees: 570 acres, 5% contained, evacuation orders still in effect (CAL FIRE). The earlier 465-acre figure is out of date. No civilians were reported injured. Of the two firefighters hospitalized with significant injuries, OCFA says one has been released and the other is doing “very good,” and OCFA Capt. Steve Concialdi expects containment to rise “dramatically” today. Winds this morning were 10 to 15 mph with stronger gusts (OCFA; CBS LA). On Friday night officials said about 16,000 residents were under evacuation orders; no updated count has been announced, and no repopulation time has been given. California secured a FEMA Fire Management Assistance Grant for the fire, the Governor said Friday evening (@CAgovernor). Cause: under investigation. Numbers change quickly; check the official pages below.

Arson: a smaller part of the picture

None of the fires above has been called arson by officials; every cause is under investigation. Most wildfires are not arson: in CAL FIRE’s 2022 Redbook, arson was 358 of the 3,333 fires (11%) and 17% of acres burned in the state responsibility areas CAL FIRE protects (CAL FIRE 2022 Redbook). NBC News (2024) reported that about 10% to 15% of California wildfires are ignited by arson each year. We could not find a county-wide Sonoma County percentage or an arson task-force report.

Sonoma County: Santa Rosa, summer 2026. Santa Rosa Fire and Police said that since June 30, 2026, investigators had tracked more than 30 small fires (all under an acre), with at least 17 believed to be intentionally set. By July 27–28 five people had been arrested in separate incidents: three on arson and two on reckless burning, per the Press Democrat. Investigators said they did not believe the five acted together, and more arrests were possible. KSRO reported the District Attorney declined to file on one of the five and was working on charges for the other four. All are accused and presumed innocent. (Press Democrat, July 27; KTVU FOX 2, July 28; CBS San Francisco; KSRO, July 28; Santa Rosa Fire/Police alert). This is a city-level count for one summer, not a county-wide share.

Other cases announced by officials. Everyone named is accused and presumed innocent.

0:54Clip audio — ABC7 Los Angeles (viewer video)Take a look at this terrifying video of the Norte Fire exploding as Santa Ana winds raged, all captured by mountain bikers out for a ride on the popular Las Ramblas [audio sounds like “Rumblas”] trail. [Bikers:] It's crazy, this man. Looks like he's in the middle of it. Oh my God, the [planes; audio unclear] are right there.

1:11Clip audio — ABC7 Los Angeles (viewer video)[Guillermo] says he was out riding with his wife and child, and they were on different parts of the trail when the fire separated them. His wife, Jackie, capturing this video. [Rider:] Oh my gosh. [Anchor:] But with flames and smoke just ahead, they turn around to seek a safer way down.
On screen: They turned back
1:26Clip audio — CBS Los AngelesI'm looking for my vantage point and I'm sad to say that I see homes that are now on fire. We see at least three homes that are on fire, which is just heartbreaking to see.

1:37Clip audio — ABC7 Los AngelesUnfortunately, there are a number of casualties on a number of different sides of this fire, including the south side. This is a large house at the end of [street name unclear] Lane at a cul-de-sac. There are about a handful of cul-de-sacs right next to [it], and they are trying to protect those neighboring structures.

1:55Clip audio — ABC7 Los AngelesThis is Patriots Hill. If you live here in Orange County, you're probably familiar with this landmark there. You can see that the fire really tore through these hills, but the flag is still flying on the top of Patriots Hill there. So pretty amazing that that area kind of held up.
