Before the game
President Trump. At the White House on Friday, Oct. 23, the President said: “I would have said the NFL could have probably postponed that match. France is really in trouble. That’s what happens when you go left” (AP; KDKA video). A day earlier, Secretary of State Marco Rubio had said “our embassy feels the game will be fine” (The Hill).
NFL security. The league said security would be heightened in coordination with French authorities and the U.S. State Department, and that the game was never in danger of not being played (NFL.com). The NFL closed its “NFL House” and its pop-up shop in Paris on Saturday, citing “potential accessibility issues” (AP).
Saturday’s protests. France’s Interior Ministry counted about 410,000 marchers nationwide and 110,000 in Paris; unions said the number was twice as high (USA Today). Clashes broke out at the end of the Paris march, and Paris police reported 142 arrests (BFMTV; BFMTV).
Game day. AP described a jovial mood and a “visible but discreet” police presence at the stadium (AP).
