On Monday night, October 5, 2026 (stories dated Tuesday Oct. 6), tens of thousands marched in Barcelona for housing rights after a weekend weather delay. Organizers (Sindicat de Llogateres and allied groups) claimed about 120,000; the Guàrdia Urbana put the crowd near 20,000. The march followed Spain-wide housing protests sparked by the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal in Madrid and by Parliament’s rejection of emergency housing decrees. That same day Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called a snap general election for November 29.
The Barcelona march was largely peaceful until after organizers ended it near Passeig de Gràcia / Gran Via. Hooded groups then threw objects at Mossos d’Esquadra officers, built barricades (police counted 28), and set fires (22 extinguished). Mossos reported 13 arrests (including a minor) and 30 officers with minor injuries. Footage shows Catalan Estelada flags, solid red flags, anti–BlackRock street theater, housing banners in Catalan and Spanish, burning bins, and police charges — not soft-pedaled here.
